Rehab Elhiny wins poster prize – ESCP Highlights
Rehab Elhiny (University College, Cork, Ireland and Minia University, Egypt) was awarded the best poster prize for her poster entitled ‘Goal attainment, medication adherence and guideline adherence in hypertension and dyslipidaemia in Ireland’.
The poster described a systematic review undertaken to evaluate the attainment of blood pressure and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) goals in the Irish population in primary and secondary prevention of cardiovascular diseases, adherence to prescribing guidelines by doctors and medication adherence among patients. The review showed that 41% of patients achieved the LDL-C goal of less than 1.8 mmol/L and 56% achieved the goal of blood pressure less the 140/80 mmHg. Medication adherence ranged from 37% – 92%. Guideline adherence findings showed that not all patients who met the criteria for lipid-lowering therapy received it and that the choice of anti0-hypertensive agents was not always in line with guidelines. Dr Elhiny conclude that there was room for improvement in all the domains evaluated.
